April 26 – Writers’ Coffeehouse


The 2013 April Fourth Friday Writers’ Coffeehouse will take place on Friday, April 26th, 2013 from 6 to 9 PM, at Planters Coffeehouse on 130 N. Main St. in Henderson, KY.

Live music is by Tyler Ross. Open Mic is at 6:30. Guest speakers begin at 7 PM. More live music and an artist showcase at 8 PM.

Our guest speakers Bios:

Mary Werner earned a Ph.D. in English in 1996 from Northern Illinois University. She moved to Kentucky in August of that same year to begin a teaching career at Madisonville Community College, where she is now a Professor of English. Mary is a member of the Appalachian Writers Association and a judge for the Appalachian Book of the Year. Her creative work has appeared in The Roundtable, The Gadfly, The Journal of Kentucky Studies and the feminist anthologies Telling Stories, and I to I: Life Writing by Kentucky Feminists.

Henderson native Joey Goebel has written four published novels (literary comedies) that have been translated into sixteen languages. His first book, The Anomalies, was a Book Sense 76 title selected by the nation’s independent booksellers and was nominated for the Kentucky Literary Award. Goebel’s second novel, Torture the Artist, was the finalist for the 2004 Kentucky Literary Award and made the long list for the Dylan Thomas Prize for 2006. Goebel’s third novel, Commonwealth, was the recipient of Romania’s Ovid Festival Prize, awarded to a prominent young talent. He recently returned from his fourth book tour of Germany, where over one hundred thousand copies of his novels have been sold. He also plays music, performing and recording under the name Dr. Lawyer.

The Showcase Artist Moment will feature the works of a promising young artist Stephanie Gish.

Stephanie was born in Anchorage, AK. Her interest in art and creative expression started in her childhood. She is a sculptor and painter with a fondness for oil and mixed media. In the future, she plans to obtain her studio arts degree from Southern Illinois University and one day establish a working studio and gallery for Henderson artists. Her artwork was published and received honorable mentions in HCC Literary Magazine.


The event will be curated by Starlyn Robinson, The Literary Magazine editor.

Fourth Friday Writers’ Coffeehouse is an outreach of the Henderson Community College Literary Magazine. The event is open to the public. Come and enjoy a relaxing evening with talented writers, musicians, and artists.
